When you initially run Clippy it will hide on your computer for 1 minute. Then it will popup and show one of the 12 random hints like the one below.

Sometimes when Clippy pops up it will tell you something that is completely useless, like this:

Other times Clippy comes out of no where and displays something completely confusing, like this:

If Clippy finds a question mark (?) within the line of text it is going to display, it will show a hint screen with a Yes and No button. You can click on either button and clippy will hide, for at least another minute. Then clippy will come back again, until you close it.

This screen shows that Clippy displays a larger hint screen based on the size of the hint message. It also shows that you can create a clippy.txt file within the same directory of Clippy and it will read that file for the hint messages to display. Cool feature!

If you choose to use the clippy.txt file, you also have the option to have Clippy read this file in order. That is read the first line, then the next, etc. By default, Clippy will randomly read a line out of the file for displaying the hint. If you use the norandom command line option, you can show a series of messages that can tell a story.
